Inspired by…The Great Gatsby

Hooooly moly have you seen Baz Luhrmann’s latest epic yet?  We went to see it over the weekend and it was so delicious I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

I know it’s got very mixed reviews in general but those COSTUMES and those INTERIORS, my goodness it seriously is incredible.  It does not seem to take more than the visuals to impress me, I clearly am no film critic.

Anyhoo so I principally spent my time drooling over the interiors and party scenes – divine:

But while I loved getting a glimpse of these incredibly elaborate spaces, I’m actually not a massive fan of this style myself (shock! horror! I’m a designer, I’m not supposed to say that!).  So I am very much outside my comfort zone when it comes to Art Deco (as in I’ve run ten marathons in the opposite direction), but have pulled together this little updated scheme that I hope Leo and Carey would still find themselves at home in.

I would personally ditch the chinoiserie panel but y’know, Leo seems to like it:

Have y’all seen the film yet?  What did you think…?

Great post and great scheme! Well fortunately you needn’t worry about us buying a mansion suitable for blingy art deco any time soon! Great film but jeez I loathe that geeky lead spiderman actor.

  2. I haven’t seen the film yet. But the book? Hello, one of my favorite things on the planet – I still have my original copy from years ago.

ELLY…you have chosen the most exquisite pieces to keep in line with the Gatsby theme – I love it all. 🙂

  3. Elly, I am going tonight to see the movie (what a surprise), I have also heard about those critics, but it is a movie one has to see, especially a crazy after the 20s like myself (even if one of the critic is that Baz Luhrmann did it too contemporary). I will be doing a lot of drooling, I am sure, starting with the flapper girls outfits and finishing with Leo, well, Leo of the 20s :)))) I do not know what’s happening because Leo is really not my type but since Django Unchained something has changed :))) Lovely post, Elly!

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I have seen trailers and stills, looks amazing. I am floored by the opulent decor and interiors, I wonder if it would be too lavish living like this…(not really), I am sure its fabulous!

  5. Oooh you are so good!! Even when you don’t particularly like the style, you’ve nailed the look totally – that brass table is just freaking amazing. I haven’t seen the film yet but it’s on the list (when it comes out on DVD cuz I’m too much a tightarse to see it in the cinema) xxx
