Design classic (7) – Chesterfield sofa and a little bit of Queeny!

So I thought I’d continue the design classic series today, but firstly I wanted to wish my Queen a very Happy Diamond Jubilee weekend.  I’ve just been reading up on her life on good ol’ Wiki – she really is a truly incredible lady.

I’m gutted to be missing the celebrations in London, but we’re heading to a Jubilee picnic and Jubilee street party on Sunday (both soggy no doubt, à la England…).

So in honour of the occasion I thought that today I’d take a look at the most quintessentially British item of furniture: the Chesterfield Sofa.

Crafted for the first time for the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), this distinctive tufted and buttoned traditionally leather sofa has been taking the world by storm ever since.

Check out these inspiration pics – I can totally see myself hanging out in all these rooms in my tweed jacket and having endless cups of tea while complaining about the weather (oops, already did that this week) and spouting out the occasional ‘bloody good show, what’.

So first up is the classic look:

Yep, I’m still totally obsessing over Harret Maxwell MacDonald’s house:

G.L.A.M.O.U.R.A.M.A – see here for the rest of this insane property:

And these next two show a refreshing light and contemporary approach:

The classic choice for where to park your bot in a library:

And this white version fits in perfectly to an elegant living room:

Restoration Hardware, I am literally in love with you:

And lastly, the ultimate in design-patriotism, the Ginger Spice of the interior design world ladies and gents…

Here are my picks of the beauts out there right now, including some surprisingly affordable options:

So please join me in wishing Queeny a lovely weekend, and let me know which Chesterfield is your cup of tea!  Have a happy weekend folks.

If it makes you feel any better about missing the Jubilee, it is going to be 10 degrees and heavy rain here! Send us some of your Hong Kong warmth perhaps?
