Monday’s Masterpiece – modernist magic

So I’ve been meaning to blog about Philippe Starck for a long time and finally decided this morning that today’s the day!  He’s a Frenchie hotel designer extraordinaire, with more big name credits under his belt than you can shake a stick at, from the Delano in Miami (which I drooled over here) to the Saint Martin’s Lane in London (where we once went for, and I quote, ‘our most bankrupting date ever’ – the Asia de Cuba there’s amazing!), to the beauts I’ve showcased below. He seems to blend ultra-modern design with sleek elegant furnishings, combining to perfection such distinct items as lucite Louis Ghost chairs with traditional tufted sofas, and seems to also have a serious soft spot for full length floaty white drapes.  Which of course I hate…

So let’s get on with the tour!  First up is the Jia Hotel In Hong Kong (which I think we can safely say I’m going to be oogling in person one day soon…).

Next up is the cool urban Sanderson in London – check out the crazy lobby in the third and fourth pics, love me a good egg chair I do…

And lastly the dreamy Fasano Rio, oooh la la:

And here are my picks of his (insane, literally) product lines:

So what do you think?  I kinda feel like this style is a little like Marmite – either you’ll love it or loathe it.  I personally love it, but in small doses (Philippe’s style I mean, Marmite’s gross…).

Ha, yep I have the same dreamy-eyed thoughts every day! The problem about blogging is that my tastes are starting to FAR exceed my bank balance… We can aspire to it though, right?

I’m with you on Starke and Marmite. I like that orange bedroom. But the Sanderson is not a nice hotel. It just doesn’t work in practice and it’s fully of horrid blokes who try to chat you up. It’s really minging. Love the HK one and lucky you going there!

Ah, that’s such a shame, I didn’t know that! Ok well I probably won’t bother checking out that one then (although I do seem to not be able to get that bubble chair out of my head). Looking forward to seeing the Jia, but I think my experience will be limited to one drinkie at le bar…
